Hmm,..

Infravision: It is a combination of highly improved night vision (you amplify any very minor available light well, like cats for instance) and a limited amount of heat vision (that part allows you to actually see in pitch dark).

The heat vision component is limited in it won't distinguish between minor differences in heat patterns and that it will not detect residual heat easily or for long.

Let's say a Full Plate Armour Paladin has walked down a halfway 10 seconds ago and is now out of sight behind a wall. The elf that comes after him cannot see residual heat in his footsteps since pretty much zero heat was transferred from him to the environment (the Thick steel shod boots prevented that.)

Replace the Paladin with an shoeless Orc and the elf might see the heat pattern on the stone very dimly for at most a minute unless the Orc stood in one spot for a long time.

A huge dragon lying sleeping on a stone floor? If he was lying there for hours his outline might show for an a few hours or more where he heated up the stone.

A 50 cm diameter or bigger fireplace that has been lit and then extinguised would probably show up in infravision for up to 12 hours or more.
