I N C - Niet-standaard World of Darkness

Ik zoek spelers voor een opstartende (dus : nog erg prille) World of Darkness setting, nieuwe regels.

Ik speel in omgeving Den Haag, op locatie of in mijn (rommelige) woning. Ik heb al een aantal geinteresseerde spelers maar ik speel pas als ik een redelijk grote groep duidelijk geinteresseerden heb.

Ik zoek daarin voornamelijk naar roleplayers en mensen die regelmatig kunnen en willen, mensen die brede interesse hebben en die bereid zijn de setting te zien als een gedanken-experiment, een maatschappij-kritische statement en een zeer hechte groep spelers. Wat ik doe is net zo zeer geofictie, speculatie en filosofie als RPG.

Ik heb geen zin in een agenda-gevecht en sessies minder dan eens in de 2 weken. Het is voor mij ook erg belangrijk dat eventuele geinteresseerden hun eigen ideeen meebrengen die aansluiten bij het onderstaande. Ben je geinteresseerd, stuur me een email of IM me.

The year 2025 in the INC setting is characterized by three important aspects; (1) a sputtering and awkward technological acceleration in several places on the world (at least seven) leading on to a possible singularity; (2) a xenophobic backlash of conservative and religious groups all over the world starting in the early years of the 21st century and escalating to a landslide demographic in the 20s and (3) a steadily decaying availability of all natural resources, specifically those based on fossil fuel energies.

In the early 21st century two matters became clear… The first, Resources, specifically oil, was diminishing rapidly, prices were increasing. Whereas demographics in the wealthy countries such as Europe, the U.S. and Japan were making clear they weren’t going to give up the level of abundance established in the mid 20th century, emerging economies were grabbing their slice of the share. Continental powers such as China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, were plucking a part of the share with their economical growth largely based on exploitation of cheap labor. The rich countries, initially deadest on competition, found themselves in a strange hold resource struggle; both economical paradigms suffered. This situation was aggravated by violent extremism, initially islamic fundamentalism but later on by anarchists, antiglobalists, christian fundamentalists, pirate radicals, anti-capitalists, greens, pro-lifers, each with their radical, violent agenda. Around 2010 the world was in the grip of hardline conservatism, repression and xenophobia. Europe started deporting failed immigrants back to countries of origin and degenerated into a police state, thereby aggravating the brutal climate of terrorist desperation. In most cities of the first world economies stagnated, unemployment ballooned, gangs of the desperate marauded the streets for scraps and mobs rioted endemic against impotent governments. A steadily aging, deeply reactionary population voted in populist leaders, who enforced curfews. However many of the conservatives couldn’t make it with deep support from leftist leaders, and so an uneasy, shaky alliance occurred: Rightwing conservative ideologues entered a marriage of convenience with radical conservationist leftists. The latter were intent on limiting consumption, economic growth, waste, pollution. Their plans were largely uninspired, defensive and the marriage of the two could only survive in a climate of scaremongry, police state repression, constant surveillance and a growing bureaucracy.

The second thing came less expected, at least not by the voter audience. In 2011 several technological breakthroughs resulted in computer technology bootstrapping it’s own development. In several places in the world computer systems started recursively rewiring its own hardware. This quickly led to consecutive breakthroughs in nanotechnology, biotechnology, genetic manipulation and fields less describable. In several centered places in the world this almost led to a technological singularity. However the shaky alliance between Conservatives and Greens in both EU and US could only respond with extreme fear of change. When artificial life was created, when mainframes started talking, the world was gripped with visceral fear and future shock. The islamic world was one massive riot for weeks. The powers could only respond with a massive crackdown. The United Nations leaped into the power vacuum by creating the instruments for global control, acting as lapdog enforcing agency paid for by power-hungry Pentagon and Brussels bureaucrats. This was the creation of the enclaves, seven discrete enclosed regions in the world, where technology had created…. an alien society. In several of the seven enclaves humans had been modified by cybertechnology and genetherapy. In five of the seven there were active, conscious, sapient A.I. systems. In one enclave there was a hivemind created by mind-machine interface. The authorities responded by closing in the enclaves with whatever resources they could muster and starting a pogrom against ill-defined “advanced technologies”. The global Internet ground to a halt and fragmented in irreconcilable subnets. Worse, after 2015 economic growth ground to a creeping less than 1% and some radical conservationists called for economic shrinkage and a distributed decrease in abundance. China, Europe, the US, most of the Arab world, Japan, all are repressive police states in 2025, with a very small and glamorous upper crust and a large, sweltering, fearful underclass with a steadily diminishing income. Infrastructures are falling apart. Religious hysteria is rampant. Racism is the norm.

Inside this festering cesspit of a world are seven enclaves; Singapore, San Francisco, Bangalore, Urayasu, Cambridge, Linden, Hannover. There places are enclosed by whatever means available. In most cases the area’s surrounding the enclaves have been mined, are on constant surveillance and anyone living nearby is well aware the governments and UN peacekeepers will probably be using thermonuclear devices if whatever is in them tries to get out. And foremost, nothing gets in, including resources.

Fortunately what resides in each of the seven enclaves is not one single entity. These are seven complex micro-societies with an internal powerstructure, objectives and requirements. It is likely that at least several of them are unfriendly towards the international powerstructure. Maybe one of them seeks to eradicate humanity by and large though it unknown which one of the seven. Another one of the seven is highly benevolent to humanity and seeks to bring abundance and prosperity to all of humanity. Six of the seven claim they actually are benevolent and one, Hannover, is not communicating in any meaningful sense. Seen from afar with one of the many tele-lenses these zones range from bizarre apocalyptic technological landscapes (Bangalore) to virtually unchanged (Linden, NY). All have residual (Bangalore) to “normal” human populations inside.

However it is obvious that whatever is inside occasionally breaks the blockades. Black market cybernetics have been appearing and are smuggled out some way. One of the seven did infect about a billion human beings with a disease-fighting nano-engineered Mitochondria (called a midichlorian in popular culture…) that make humans by and large resistant against most strains of the influenza … and do some other things. Some humans have strange patterned cancers growing in their frontal lobe that have no discernible function ….but which do adjust behavior slightly… and those found with these small mutations are routinely picked up by secret police and interned.

It is assumed that if the UN is to wage an aggressive war against any of the enclaves, the other six enslaves with retaliate. It is known that six of the seven enslaves is digging deep underground, in one case (Cambridge) six kilometers straight down. All seven are assumed to have biochemical, nanotechnological, chemical and nuclear doomsday devices. So the world is caught with a MAD (mutually assured destruction) danger of an unknown nature. There is even whisper of a UN-controlled eight “slaved” enslave, on an undisclosed location, existing primarily to research means to oppose the existing enslaves.

The Supernatural
In this melting pot of conflicting politics things are in many aspects the same as they were in first decade of the 21st century, with more police, more religious nuts, more political extremism, more superstition, more fear, less economical growth, less hope, less consumerism, a bigger gap between rich and poor and more vicious politics. People recycle more, but all economic models indicate the current society is no longer sustainable. Whereas some rich countries cozy up to what remains in high-yield oil producing countries (remember the 2019 Kazakhstan genocide, anyone?) in most first world countries coal has become the de facto means of heating houses.

What few people know, or dare believe, is that in this world, for many thousands of years, supernatural beings have existed. In all major metropolitan area’s there are vampires, probably about one every ten thousand living humans. There are also some remaining shapeshifters, probably a million worldwide, most of these werewolves, trying to survive in the few remaining wildlife reserves. There are people who practice magic, maybe a hundred thousand true magi, and ten times that many more restrictive mystics. There has always been a small undercurrent of humans with… something in them… generally referred to as demon-possessed, maybe no more than a hundred thousand worldwide. And there is more… hard to catch …occurring out there.

The supernatural world has always been low-keyed, subtle and pervasive. They have always influenced financial, political and bureaucratic institutions for afar, very keen on avoiding each other’s zones of control. Their magic emanations have always been subtle, low key, conservative and directed at maintaining secrecy. Humanity has by and large not expected there was a supernatural, except in some lingering superstition around the world.

However that has changed. With the onset of the enclaves, it became clear that the advanced technologies residing within the enclaves was able to ascertain the existence of the supernatural. Vampires know very well to stay the hell away from the influence of the enclaves. The enclaves are all aware of the existence of vampires. Most enclaves have developed some means to deal with the discrete effects of true magi, so they’ll probably be aware what true magi are.

However all enclaves are non-magical phenomena. They are all materialist science run amok, staggering towards a singularity take-off point when nobody can stop them advancing any further, not even themselves. The enclaves would take off and probably will take off, if they had unlimited access to resources and energy. Any of the enclaves might be on the verge of developing viable fusion reactors, or a self replicating controllable nano-pathogen, or nano factories capable of producing an unlimited series of robots, capable to spreading. However the enclaves are most likely concerned of what is hidden among humanity, outside their limited zones of control. Could it be the enclaves are waging a defensive strategy against the supernatural just as much as the mundane world is trying to keep them locked inside?

Het lijkt mij ook erg tof, alleen kan ik niet garanderen vaak te komen, het is een eindje reizen plus ik ben al aardig bezet met RPG
Daarnaast ben ik redelijk onbekend met WOD, maar ik wel leren. Dus 1 keer per maand kan ik denk ik wel (ligt eraan welke dag).

Ik heb een brede kring mensen "die wel willen" maar ik heb onder geen beding meer interesse in mensen die "eens in de maand kunnen naast wat ze al doen". Ik heb er ervaring mee; de spelers komen weer binnen na een maand en kunnen zich nog nauwelijks herinneren waar het over ging. Mijn plotlines zijn daarvoor te complex en gedetailleerd.

Ik roleplay/GM sinds 1980 en ALS ik nog iets ga doen dan wil ik er tijd in steken. In eerste instantie om op te starten zoek ik exclusief mensen in de buurt (den haag) die in princiepe iets van 2 keer per maand willen spelen. Tevens zoek ik mensen die of wat "breder geinteresseerd" zijn in wat er in de wereld gaande is. Mijn RPG's kunnen buitengewoon diep gaan, intens, shit hoe zeg ik dat. Mijn vrouw zegt "aangrijpend".

Later sta ik open voor mensen die wat minder kunnen en willen spelen, als ik maar een solide kern heb om mee te werken. Weinig combat, veel praten, complexe plots, etc. etc.

Dat noemen wij "serious roleplaying"! Er komen weinig spelers uit regio den haag hier, maar ik heb diegenen die er wel vandaan komen op de hoogte gesteld van je post.

je klinkt echt als een top GM. Iemand met wie ik graag zou willen spelen. Maar ik zie mezelf niet echt elke keer naar den haag reizen. Misschien ooit nog eens.

Yup, zoals jij het omschrijft zo zie ik het graag, 'serious roleplaying' indeed, als het niet in Den Haag was zou ik zeker een poging wagen. Ik zie bijna alle dingen die jij schrijft (van wat je wil) hetzelfde behalve dan dat ik van kleine groepen hou voor de vele redenen die ik in dit forum al omschreef.

@ Dagon, ik weet niet of je er ooit zin in zou hebben, maar als je een keer voor ons 'Gildehuis' groepje een eenmalige sessie zou willen runnen, dit zou ik zeer tof vinden. Wellicht voor ons inspirerend en leerzaam.

Als de sessie nou echt 'the sessions to end all sessions' zou blijken dan zou ik (en wellicht ook anderen) het wel een reeele optie vinden om me eens een de twee weken me te verplaatsen naar Den Haag om in vast verband een moddervette sessie te spelen. Ik wil niets liever dan met een erg goede vaste DM, en goede vaste groep te spelen. Dit lukt tot nu toe aardig maar het kan altijd beter natuurlijk.

Ik ben een beetje een zeikerd met regels (ik vind de standaard WoD regels nogal sucken) maar voor de rest lijkt me leuk. Email me op mijn welbekende adres en laat me weten wat jullie willen, hoe het moet worden geserveerd, hoeveel mensen er mee doen en wat de doelstelling is. Ik ben erg stroef met RP (twee jaar alleen maar WoW en SL) maar ik wil mijn hersens weer eens wakker schudden.

Cool! We (toch?) zullen deze week even de koppen bij elkaar steken en kijken wat we willen en dan mailen. Ik vermoed:

Een sessie van hooguit 4 uur, 4 spelers en jij als DM, setting niet belangrijk (hoewel Fantasy of jou Post Apocalyptische setting voor de hand liggen, laatste lijkt mij persoonlijk erg interessant) regels vinden wij ook nogal ondergeschikt. De PC's zullen wellicht bestaande zijn die we ombouwen naar jou setting maar zou ook kunnen dat sommige mensen nieuwe willen maken.

We hebben dus een 'RPG' gildehuis en als je zou willen komen ben ik er wel voor om je treinkaartje te lappen gezamenlijk. Zo niet dan kunnen we verplaatsen en er wellicht een leuk Den Haag uitstapje of misschien zelfs fietstochtje aan vast breien (ik en Cali fietsen af en toe naar Schevingen, is vrij goed te doen).

Ik was dit topic al weer bijna vergeten! Maar het lijkt mij het handigst al dagonweb hierheen komt. Scheelt ons drie treinkaartjes, en kunnen wij lappen voor zijn kaartje!
Aangezien we meestal toch niet lang doorspelen op de woensdagsessie moet dat ook niet zo'n probleem zijn lijkt me. Hoe denk jij daarover Dagonweb?
