Saving Lothunia, part 1

In the last couple of sessions, things got pretty crazy. It started when we were searching through the lower parts of the city to find the "bullies" and kill them. They had something called "black powder". It turns out this black powder was spread by someone called Dof Magor (who turned out to be Heknos's father) It was meant to create chaos in the cities, because it made people crazy and murderous. But it was very addictive stuff... It was being made in a huge castle, owned by Dof himself. That castle was destroyed by our party completely in another long session.

Soon enough, it all got out of hand. We went to check it out, and found other types of creatures dwelling in the sewers. Grey-skinned, boney humanoids with 2 tentacles coming from the shoulderblade area. They were put there for some reason. Probably to make it all less attractive to go down there and to create more madness.
Eventually, the people revolted (as it was somebody's plan of course), and they became frantic and also angry towards the king, who seemingly didn't do anything about it. The king, dramaticly self-protective as he was (yes... WAS) then acted. He ordered his troops to go into the lower cities and kill every living being. Men, women, children, the elderly... None were spared. We at that point HAD to go into the old cities to find out what was going on and saw the whole thing happening. The dead were stacked on piles and left to rot.
Also, the king ordered all the other nobles dead, because he became paranoid that one of the other noble was trying to take him from the throne and claim it for himself. We were working for one particular. Jonos. Remember the little kid we had with us? (Dunno if you’ve heard about it) well, that was his son, and after saving him, we started working for Jonos. Well, not really working for him, but there was a mutual interest, and we allied against the forces of evil. Aaaaanyway… After our trip in the lower cities, we came back and found Jonos’s mansion was set to fire. We saw an old friend, who took us to a secret hide-out. We later found out that Jonos, his wife and son were all still ok, and hidden in another secret place. However, his loyal servant and guidance councelor (and martial arts master) Chi was captured, aswell as another guy, who we knew from earlier adventures; Mirabo, a high power mage and advisor/friend of the king.
The word went out that the king’s son, Nathan, was on his way with an army of knights. Nathan was gone to become a knight, since 20 years. All the hopes of the people were focused on that man.

The first part of the session, we had to infiltrate the palace-dungeon, free Chi and Mirabo, and get out. We got some help from a couple of other adventurers, plus Garum, an apprentice mage, and assistant of Mirabo. We saved him once, a long time ago.
The rest consisted of a woman in black, called Diona, who had the power to heal wounds, there was Avus, an elven mage, Servus, an excellent archer elf, and finally Potron, a huge guy with an enormous axe and a thirst for battle.

The first part was to scout ahead. We observed the situation at the point of entry. A boat came in every now and then to bring in new prisoners, a few guards were at the watergate. Arumin thought of a strategy to enter the dungeons swiftly. We all agreed on this plan. The plan went as followed:
First, Heknos and Arumin – with the added help of a water-breathing magic spell – went through the gate (which was partially underwater) when a boat full of prisoners entered. Once inside, they waited till the boat was out of sight and got out of the water. There was one guard, who they killed rather easily.
Meanwhile, Jenna and Helena swam across the river, standing ready to attack a couple of guards when the sign was given. The archer elf and the rest were on the other side, behind some boats and could not be seen by the other guards in front of the gate. There was one guard here who could not be easily killed by us, so the archer had to take care of him from a distance.
Back inside, Heknos and Arumin went back towards the gate from the other side. They hid from a couple of guards who walked passed them, and killed two others, still waiting in a small room. Their mission was to go out a small gate and kill two more guards on the front side. (So, there were 5 guards in front of the gate total)
On the front side, one more guard showed up, said he couldn’t sleep, so he joined the other two. It was our idea that the mage elf would cast a spell that nullifies sound around the two guards Helena and Jenna had to kill, so they would die without causing commotion. That new guy sat down next to those ‘had to be silenced’ guards, and started singing! Crap.. (now a total of 6 guards, you still following me?)
After that it went quite fast, Arumin and Heknos quickly killed the 2 guards, then the singing stopped, and Helena and Jenna struck quickly, killing the 3 guards without breaking a sweat (mainly though, that was because we were chilling our asses of while waiting for the sign, sitting in cold water). The last guard went down with 3 arrows hitting him at once… Head, chest and gut.

We were in! yay!

The guards that passed Heknos and Arumin earlier also ended up very very dead. We resumed our way inside towards the prisons, using the key we took from one of those dead guards. In the prison cells there were a lot of people, starving to death, meager, sick, covered in wounds and more stuff you don’t want to have on you. We had to ignore it for the time being, and went on.
We told the others to stay put at a certain point (can’t really remember where, but somewhere in those corridors), and we (the player characters only) went on alone for a bit. We came to a door with a lock on it, which Helena had to pick to open it, and later on a fence with a magical lock on it. Helena tried to open it, but failed, resulting in being electrocuted and sent flying backwards a couple of feet. Heknos resolved this by shattering the lock with magic. Bluntly though, Heknos walked into the next corridor and stepped on a stepping stone, which caused another trap to be set off, and Heknos his hair got singed. At the end of the (furthermore trap-free) corridor, there was a room, large spikes on the ceiling, a huge door at the other side and a lever at the right side of it. And on the right side, a small corridor, where a nasty growl echoed from. Behind the door, a strange ticking sound emerged.

Then we heard fighting noises, and went back…

We ran all the way back to the entrance of the prison, and ran on into another section. We found our comrades fighting a group of guards. Servus was shot by a crossbow and hurting bad, lying on the floor. Avus was also hit, but still standing. A few guards were on the ground, dead. When we came in, 1 guard with a sword was on our side, and 3 with crossbows on the side behind an iron drop-gate. Heknos summoned a small monkey that played around with the spare-preloaded-crossbows, Helena shot one, Jenna threw here dagger at a third foe.. Needless to say, soon enough they were all dead.
Diona, the healer, tried her best to save Servus, but alas, it was too late. He died. The rest was still quite ok, though some were wounded a little. (Just a fleshwound!) It turned out they were discovered and had to fight them all to death in order for an alarm not to go off… Behind the drop-gate, we found Chi. He said he could get out on his own, so he left right away.
So, now all-together, we went back to that place with the spikes in the ceiling. Heknos summoned another monkey who he sent towards the lever. Almost as soon as the monkey went into the room, a spike rushed down, and the monkey was completely slashed and pierced. (I can still remember the horror.. oh dear god, the horror… sad little monkey)
The surviving elf, Avus, used a telekinetic type of magic to turn the lever from a distance. The lever was connected to a series of mechanical devices that opened the door on the other side. Behind this door we saw a light coming from above, shining down upon what could only be described as an iron maiden. (a big sarcophagus with large spikes on the inside to keep the body ‘in place’)
Perhaps with the lever down, it was possible to walk through the room without being spiked to a horrible, painful death. Helena almost lost her foot while trying to find that out. A strong magic was present, Avus was not good enough to counter it, nor was Garum.

Avus, being an elf, possessed the gift of sight in dim-lit places, remarked something about a hidden entrance in the wall of the corridor we were in. We checked it out, and there indeed was a hidden entrance. The door opened, in front of us were some steps down, leading to a T-split. From the left we heard footsteps… HEAVY footsteps. In the gloomy, dark and small hallway, a huge man came through. His face hidden behind a solid mask, wearing thick clothes, covered in blood. Arumin is tall, Potron is about the same size (both around 6 ft). This guy however, was roughly a foot taller. He was big and fat. Arumin took up the challenge alone and rushed towards him, sword first, in a heroic effort to slaughter the man. It didn’t really work out the way he wanted it to, and Arumin accidentally dropped his sword. The huge guy then grasped his immensely strong arms around Arumin and tried to crush his bones. Arumin could not get out, even with his boosted strength, this guy was just too strong, even for him. Both Heknos and Helena saw it happen, and quickly rushed forward to help out Arumin, jamming their rapiers deep inside his sides. Helena stabbed him in his armpit, so the strength in one arm faltered, enabling Arumin to break free and pick up his sword. Together, they lunged at the giant. Heknos, who was very quick in his attacks, had a very good shot at his right arm, cutting through most of the flesh. When the giant tried to hit Helena and succeeded, Helena’s head proved a little resistant, causing the last bone to break, and the arm to fall off. Now, the big guy was hurt bad, but still standing. Arumin finally ended it, splitting open his chest.

In the meantime of this fight, Jenna, together with Diona and the others (except for Potron, who was waiting to fight the bloody giant) found the wizard Mirabo, hanging upside down, cut open. Metal clams held his belly open, displaying his insides. After a lot of healing from both Diona and Jenna, Mirabo was able to speak again, and wasn’t so much troubled by wounds any more.

Now, with the aid of this high-powered wizard, it was time to deactivate the spikes and see what was in that sarcophagus/maiden.
Mirabo dispelled the magic around the spikes, and they all came down slowly, not going back up again. It was believed the maiden held king Dissius. All the magic users joined to open it, giving their magic powers to the still weakened Mirabo, who used all of his strength to open the maiden.
You might wonder… wasn’t there a growl in a small corridor on the side? Aye, there was… Arumin, Potron and Helena soon discovered where that came from. A big, undead dog-like thing came at us. We fought it off, but Potron got hurt in the process. A large part of the flesh on his shoulder was ripped from him. He went K.O., but wasn’t dead yet. The beast was apparently just hungry, because it went backinto the shadows from wence it crawled.
The maiden opened up, slowly, and inside was indeed the king. His body pierced, meager, dying… he fell out of the maiden. Garum dropped to the floor, yelling “Father!” Heh.. didn’t see that coming… So yeah, king Dissius died in his hands, but he said he was truly sorry for all he had done. He was being influenced by the darkness and the black powder.

Using our last healing abilities, we patched up Potron (who now had a deformed shoulder, but was otherwise ok) and headed out, back to our hiding place, and from there to Jonos. Heknos used his new bird-skull-whistle to summon a ghostly horse, made of bones… and rushed with a very weak Mirabo towards Jonos. His wife, Suné, was a very good herbalist and a powerful healer of both body and spirit.
The rest had to walk there. They all noticed something. People were walking in the streets, but something was wrong, terribly wrong! They were all undead. They were zombies. All the people killed before were now minions of darkness, filling the streets.

the second part will follow soon enough.

How does this story end? Will our brave heroes save the world? What will happen to Dof Magor? Tune in next time, folks!!!
